item updated on date seems inccorrect
Devilgrey Resident
the new listing feature displaying update date seems incorrect. many listings i haven't touch in months, possibly even years, are saying it was recently updated.
this i a useful feature but its not great that it's innaccurate

Marketplace: Item updated on - not the feature we asked for + false dates
RohanaRaven Zerbino
Hey Linden Lab! What is this mess with “Item updated on:“ on Marketplace pages? If I remember correctly, we asked for „date of creation“ data. According to you, the oldest item I have on MP has been updated on 05/06/2025, even it hasn’t been touched for years. Now, that is just false information, I am sorry. We have enough of customer support to do already, I really don’t need to explain your mess to my customers in addition to everything I need to cover to run my business.
Also: Have you taken into account that we all need to read the dates, not just USA residents? How about some other, more clear format like: 06 – May – 2025? May – 06 – 2025? You do know that USA is the only one using month-day-year format, and your customer base is international?
Also: It would be nice if you would inform us about the changes you are making on OUR marketplace listings. This is not the first time that changes are made with zero heads up, you are just waiting for us to notice. Marketplace is not your playground, it is your job, you need to do some testing and some public convo before introducing changes.
As I said on the forum:
Merchants: “We need toilet paper.”
Linden Lab: “We got you: premium sandpaper, enjoy!”
P.S. This is me, giving my best to be polite, while boiling in my office. Sorry if I failed.

needs info
Can you give us some examples please with the updated date you were expecting? This will help us investigate further. Thanks!

I am surprised clarification on the simple issue is needed. It seems that LL does not make a difference between product and product listing. What is important information for the buyer is the
product
update. Correcting typos in the listing is not considered to be an update, and is harmful and misleading.Having both the date of creation and the date of last update of the product is what would give customers accurate and transparent information - if the dates are accurate and reflect actual changes.
Date of creation / upload to Marketplace:
This is the date when the product is first uploaded to the Marketplace window in-world from the merchant's inventory.
LL’s tutorial in here: [https://youtu.be/hTMgQ2MkDpA?si=_GVYmYxCusprKVF-&t=66]
If that date is unavailable (due to the item being very old), it should say something like:
Created before [some known earliest possible date]
Date of update:
This should reflect when the actual product object was updated (again, via the Marketplace window in-world).
LL’s tutorial in here:[ https://youtu.be/vEsRQgyN-No?si=KB-nusq9MF6z_M48&t=37]
What update is Not:
Changes made to the listing only — like title, description, features, price, LM, etc. — are not considered to be product update, but listing update.
False update dates are not acceptable.
Here’s a real example to demonstrate the issue:
This item was uploaded to Xstreet around 15 years ago.
The product itself has never been updated.
The listing has been updated some years ago.
No changes have been made in 2025.
Yet, it now shows an “Updated on: 05/06/2025”
So, you are saying to buyers that actual product have been updated on 05/06/2025 and that they can expect the modern version of the 15 years old animation, even zero changes to the product ever have been made, least of all in 2025.
We need clarity, not confusion.
Hence my remark on international-friendly date format, too.
Customers care of the (accurate) product updates, not about listing typos updates.
I urge LL not to create another missed opportunity for improvement.
Observation Arcana
I like the 'last updated on', but it does need to be more universal than numbers, and does need to be, well, actually accurate. Creation date is also very important to know, but I think most would want both.
Could maybe improve the whole listing process from inworld too, so we can add things like 'reason for update' when changing listings to different folders? Pushing a dated changelog to a new tab on the listing itself instead of manually at the end of descriptions/notecards would be helpful for everyone.
Also, please LL, can there be a clear 'site changelog' button on marketplace somewhere? With a 'last update: [date]' under it or something? So we even know changes like this Even Happened In The First Place?? I had no idea this tiny little 'item updated on' text existed til opening Feedback today.

Observation Arcana Big agree on the latter, a changelog of
some sort
is needed. Every time I go to the marketplace, some small thing has changed with the layout or functionality; if they insist on making small changes live like that, instead of a big all at once update, they Need to be documented somewhereEventyra Resident
Thing I noticed with this is even if it is just updating the text in the listing it changes the update date... To me that is not really an updated product. I would rather see when the product itself has been updated.

We definitely did ask for update information to also be considered at the Web User Group meetings, however we did discuss the idea that an additional page be added as a tab, so that you could see the history of an item...such as added content March 5th 2022 ... Changed Images August 27th 2023 ...Updated version to now include rainbows and sparkles November 10th 2024 and so on.
This way a one date to rule them all is not a factor, but an actual ongoing history even including things like reformatted listing information, if all that was done was a bit more information rather than an actual change to the item itself. My dates are all over the place on my items and as stated this is a bonfire waiting to happen, this lets a lot of people get away with not having made any changes or updates to things ever... having new customers believe they are doing so.

yeah all my products are showing up as updated this week but i haven't touched some in 2+ years. god idea, horrible execution. hoping it gets fixed.

I think for existing products, if the original date can't be obtained then it should not even be shown. Customers will be confused by everything apparently having been updated on May the 6/7th (for me in AEST, it shows 7th) o.o;
It may also be more relevant positioned next to the product version instead? Though it might clutter the product name area... hmm. Perhaps move version & date below the product name.
Zii Minotaur
On further inspection I have all sorts of dates on my items and it's not clear what they are relevant to. @.@
Reid Parkin
Could you tell us what its purpose is?
I agree that date format should be fixed by displaying the month in letters.
I dont think the feature is very useful for customers because its misleading in its current form. There may be many people hitting redeliver and looking for something different in the product, because you are stating item updated, not listing updated.
We would appreciate an explanation.

Adding, I would like to know and understand exactly what actions trigger a new updated date. Some negate the value to me of a date showing Value to me: Customer asks self, "When was the last time the seller or their official manager edited this item, or this ad?" I.e. if they may need support, when was the most recent time the seller/manager attended to/edited either item or ad. Let the customer decide their comfort level of purchasing e.g. an expensive item, also using that bit of information. Some of my updates yes others no seem triggered by a sale. If a sale of that item is triggering updates in some way, this seems to defeat what I pictured as the value. Good start, good potential, great discussion. Thanks!
