It is Second Life at fault, showing people offline to each other while standing next to each other. IMs not getting through because it states someone is offline when they are clearly online.

This is happening to a lot of people and has been an issue on and off for months. Even my wife and I, in the same house on the same IP, see each other as offline and cannot send or receive IMs to each other.

With my friend, dancing next to me, we were both offline to each other until I sent an IM and then it suddenly changed her online status.
