- Download 7.2.3 Beta for macOS
- Launch viewer
- After about one minute pop up box says that 7.2.2 is required to login in. The box has an OK button to agree to the download, but no cancel button
- Close the viewer as I already have 7.2.2 installed
- 7.2.2 downloads and installs despite OK button not being clicked
- Goto 1 and enter an endless loop

Hi Earnest,
This sounds like the scenario that happens when Preferences > Setup > "Willing to update to Beta" is unticked. When it's unticked, it will immediately try to update to the Release version.
Tick that box and see if the Beta will run. If it does not, please email your Second Life logs to bug-attachments@lindenlab.com and reference the issue name in the email subject line. This page tells you where to find the logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3
Thank you!

Dan Linden, that was the correct resolution, but that option is mis-named. The only reason that I unticked "Willing to update to Beta" was because I thought it was broken because while I had it ticked I was never offered a Beta upgrade.
Its natural meaning in a section called Software Updates is that Beta updates would be offered automatically, as opt-ins, or left purely manual depending on the selection in the previous drop-down. A more accurate descriptor would be "Permit this viewer to be updated to Beta versions." That is a bit convoluted and it would probably be better to reverse its functionality and make it a tick box for "Do not apply Beta updates."
Regardless of the confusing option name a download should not be triggered when the stable version is already installed and the OK button has not been clicked to authorise the download.
