Mainline Viewer crashes on launch
complete

Attempt to launch SL. Watch the viewer immediately crash. This does not persist in the current beta viewers, but it does seem to be related to some recent (possibly insider) Windows updates and should be considered a high priority. The information pasted into
Platform
is from one of these beta viewers. Event Viewer shows the following errors. (Edit: The beta only seems to run if launched from the installer. If you attempt to relaunch the viewer, it obfuscates the event viewer logs and only reports an upload to bugsplat. Based on a crash from Firestorm at the same point, it's likely related to MSCTF.dll.)Faulting application name: SLPlugin.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x659dc0e6

I hope this issue is still getting active attention because I suspect it
may
be related to an unresolved jira report, BUG-234655, now archived at https://github.com/secondlife/jira-archive/issues/11546 that is still very much a problem for me, sometimes triggering an SLPlugin.exe crash (not
a viewer crash) more than once a minute with the current release and beta viewers (and Firestorm's PBR beta, but not the PBR-capable Cool VL Viewer).Having found this report I tried both disabling handwriting recognition and reconfiguring Windows Speech Recognition, but to no avail in my case.
If my archived jira is still active internally, perhaps it warrants some "related" link with this issue. If it's not still active, please advise if I should open a new issue here in Canny.
(Incidentally, this reply is following up on advice from a Support ticket #2175728.)

Beq Janus from Firestorm debugged this crash on Firestorm and found that handwriting recognition in Windows was enabled.
The test and method of disabling it can be found at this stack overflow link.

May have found a solution.
Since Firestorm was crashing at the same point, and did not obfuscate Windows logs, I was able to determine that there was an issue with MSCTF.dll. Per comments within FIRE-33392 on their JIRA, someone mentioned that this was used for "Microsoft Text Services Framework", which relates to speech recognition and the ability to use international keyboards. I have the NA/EN and JP keyboards installed to Windows, and use Windows Speech Recognition for unrelated software.
Opening Windows Speech Recognition had me reconfigure it for the first time (likely due to the recent reinstallation of Windows). Completing this, and making no other changes, has allowed me to consistently log in.

Dan Linden Sorry, I've been out of the country with limited access.
This was originally on the
Release Preview
channel, but persisted after having to reinstall Windows for unrelated reasons. This system is currently on the main channel.Dan Linden
Which of the Windows Insider tracks are you on? I'm trying to repro this on Dev, but cannot so far.

Hi Amalia.
Sorry to hear of the crash issues. We need to get the logs from you. Canny does not currently support uploading logs, so we'll need to do this through a Support ticket.
Please log into https://support.secondlife.com/ and click the "Submit a Support Case" in the right column. Reproduce the viewer failure and then zip up your viewer logs folder and attach it to support ticket. There's an Attach a file link at the bottom.
This page tells you where to find the logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3
Thank you!
