Media on a Prim Audio Controls Not Working in Linux
Galaxy Littlepaws
When playing Media On A Prim in Linux, the audio controls for Media don't affect it at all. This includes changing the volume or muting. There is no difference - it's on and the same volume no matter what. The only thing that works is toggling it off completely.
- Start playing some media on a prim, such as a TV
- Try to adjust the volume or mute Media in the Audio settings of the viewer
I am using EndeavourOS, which is Arch based. This has also been seen in CachyOS.

or:
Common Reasons Why Voice and Media Donât Work in Firestorm (Ubuntu)
- SLVoice/Vivox doesnât start: Firestorm uses a 32âbit binary for voice (Vivox/SLVoice). On 64âbit Ubuntu, required 32âbit libraries are often missing.
- Incomplete multimedia support: Media playback in Firestorm relies on GStreamer. If plugins are missing, videos and audio streams wonât play.
- Library conflicts: Some Ubuntu versions renamed libraries (e.g.,libidn.so.11âlibidn.so.12), breaking compatibility with SLVoice.
Packages Usually Missing on Ubuntu
Users running Ubuntu 22.04 with Firestorm 6.6.8 reported success after installing:
```bash
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends \
gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio:i386 \
libidn12:i386 \
libuuid1:i386 \
libstdc++6:i386 \
patchelf
Then, inside the Firestorm installation folder:
```bash
cd path_to_firestorm_folder
patchelf --replace-needed libidn.so.11 libidn.so.12 bin/SLVoice
This fixes the broken reference in
SLVoice
to the correct libidn
version. ---
Practical Steps to Restore Voice and Media
- Enable 32âbit support:
- Run
dpkg --add-architecture i386
if not already enabled. - Install the packages listed above.
- Check GStreamer plugins:
Install additional plugins for full media playback:
```bash
sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:i386 \
gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:i386 \
gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly:i386
```
- Verify microphone and firewall settings:
- Ensure
SLVoice
isnât blocked by AppArmor or firewall rules. - In Ubuntu Settings, confirm Firestorm has microphone access.
- Test with the official Second Life viewer:
- If voice/media work there, the issue is Firestorm-specific.
- If not, itâs a system library problem.
---
Things to Keep in Mind
- Ubuntu updatesmay break dependencies, so after upgrading check if SLVoice still works.
- Compiling Firestormfrom source is possible but complex; most users prefer the official binaries plus library fixes.
- Other Linux distros(like Arch) face similar issues, confirming itâs a Vivox/GStreamer dependency problem.
