PBR Update Causing Serious Texture Load Failure
needs info
Lorelai Mistwallow
Textures in every viewer since the PBR update have now been unloading and reloading, often times failing to do so, and remaining blurry. I have tried everything suggested such as whitelisting viewers and their features, but I know I'm not the only one experiencing this. This is completely game breaking and as a texture artist it's near impossible to have a consistent workflow when half the time my textures aren't loading in. I have a new GPU and plenty of RAM to spare and then some so it's not my computer.
I have been able to go into the EDIT menu and have it load in, but it does this for the diffuse texture only, and when exiting the menu it will go back to attempt its reloading cycle with multiple failures. PLEASE FIX THIS.

This happens to me a lot, too. I've been getting help from an FS dev on the issue but we still haven't found a solution. Not to mention whichever viewer I use (I've had to cycle between FS, SLV, and Alchemy--whichever was actually letting me stay inworld--for the past two weeks), it eats up literally all my available memory: CPU, VRAM, and disk. And yes, I was advised to try the FS Beta version, but I didn't even hit the loading screen before everything spiked and I crashed so badly my screen flickered to black.
I've never had this problem before PBR and would often visit sims with Ultra and 256m DD on, with two different browsers, GIMP, Discord, two chat programs and even a document editor running at same time. Now I have to turn everything off just to get 5-8 FPS with Ultra at 80-90m DD on fully decorated sims so I could take a photo. It's starting to feel like gambling every time I log in, which would probably be great if I were a gambler, but I'm not. :P
SL is really starting to lose its appeal with all the crashes.

Same problem. Prior to PBR I have never experienced any problems running the viewer programs no matter the environment. With the latest update, I spent a lot of time adjusting settings, till I was able to get textures around me to stay in focus and stop going blurry then sharp every 90 seconds, as well as reduce (but by no means resolve) these odd cycling power spikes, but even standing still alone on my sim with no other background programs running, suddenly my FPS drop 70% and I hear all my PC fans kick on trying to cool down, then it goes back to normal, repeatedly. It seems to be independent of whatever kind of environment I'm in (IE packed heavy lag sim or a empty mostly static one). However with the adjustments trying to stabilize the power spikes while still having viewer focus stability, it now takes 15 minutes for textures in inventory sub-windows to display, as soon as I minimize the sub-window its gone and I have to wait 15 minutes for them to load again. Its rather a deal breaker for me so far, but I do trust people smarter them me to fix it provided they are aware the problem is occurring for many users. Thank-you kindly for any assistance.

There have been several fixes to texture loading since this was filed. If anyone is still seeing texture load failures with the current Second Life 7.1.10.10800445603 - DeltaFPS , please comment where you are seeing the issues and attach a screenshot if possible.

Came here looking for this issue to be tracked - You are not alone in this struggle. It doesn't matter where I go, or what I do, I am forever 'refreshing textures' just to see what I'm looking at. I even asked about it in a discord before I found this. Others told me they were experiencing the same problems. I'm hoping this would maybe also fix the weird bounce back textures seem to be doing a lot of too. Were diffuse will revert to a previously used one, or the tinting process reverts back. THAT has been happening to me a lot more too.

I'm now also noticing that under the legacy (blinn) this reloading is wiping out the norm and spec, and if you try to replace it, it stays grey, and refuses to show on a surface, or even in the preview panel. Remaining absent from the surface, gray in the inventory, I have to relog to fix that one every time. It IS there when I log back in without reapplying it, but if that texture reloads on it's own again, poof gone. I relogged 2 nights ago 10x+, just trying to finish a single surface. I'm currently using FS tho, and will be reverting back to pre-pbr.

Ive noticed this alot with PBR textures, they will grey out, or pop in and out, Im using a high end gaming computer too so this isnt just something linked to lower end machines.

SL Feedback I'm also in "initializing texture cache" twilight zone of SL :( I've been unable to log on for a week. Hopefully a fix comes soon SOS

Hello, and thank you for your detailed report regarding the texture loading issues since the PBR update. We understand how frustrating this can be, especially for texture artists like yourself who rely on consistent performance for their work. This issue has been brought up in the past and is currently tracked. While we don't have an estimate on when it may be resolved, please know that our team is aware and looking into it. We appreciate your patience and your commitment to improving Second Life. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

SL Feedback I can't even login with the new viewer, it crashes while initializing texture cache. The two times I did let me in I got 5fps and most of the textures were missing or rezzing in and out randomly. I tried to download an older viewer only to find they were not listed anywhere anymore.

Darling Brody Try Alchemy Viewer, Ive found that too work a little smoother than most.

Christina Riederer I managed to get in after Dan Linden came to the rescue with a viewer update for some obscure bug that crashes Intel graphics built into some CPUs.
Prior viewers give me between 15 to 60 frames depending on my settings, however the new viewer is consistently between 5 to 10 with it mostly on 7. it is good to be able to get into test things but I can't work in that frame rate.
I'll continue to test the viewers they throw at me while they sort out the new graphics standard.
