Ability to rename a group
planned
Amber Lyndhurst
I have been in bussiness for over 17 years in sl with the same group, I would love to add the word "Rentals" to the end of the group name so it explains what the group is about and is easier to find, if we can rename AV's, surely we can rename groups? the only way to rename a group at the present is to create a new group, evict everyone from the old group then invite them to the new group.

Happy to see this is now planned.

I have been wondering this very same thing. Recently I created a new group and sent notices for a month asking people to move over to it. On the final day when I closed the group down, I had a slue of people messaging me asking me why they were kicked.
I sent notices weekly, even on the day of, sent notecards to all group members, invited all group members by UUID to the new group and yet people thought they had done something wrong.
I look forward to the day when we can change group names.

Premium Plus members should not have to pay for this renaming service.

Loni Onyx no one should have to pay for it, it should've been a feature from the beginning.

all it would need to prevent greifing/trolling is a limit on how often it can be changed.

Pay to change GROUP NAME

You can make a group in 2006 and in 2023 want to change the group name because of branding or changes to how the group functions. You don't want to just make a new group, because you would be gambling on the fact that people would follow you to that new group. Being able to pay a small fee $10.00 should be possible with a ticket. The fee would discourage this just being something done willy nilly, but could help a lot of group messes.

I would even be happy with a "display name" concept for groups. I named my store group in 2009 and the concept of my store has morphed over the years. (I originally made gowns. Now more latex and club wear.) My original store name included the word "couture" which I have dropped. I'm not going to try to move over 12,000 group members to a new group so I'm stuck with the old store/group name. I would pay a small fee for this. Small like $5-$10. (If it was $40 I wouldnt do it.)

I think a reasonable fee should be applied to this so it is not abused. For me, reasonable is something under 5$.

I've heard a lot of comments over the years about if a group is changed to an undesirable name but there's easy fixes. Temporarily remove the group from people's profiles. Send a message just like any notice stating the group name is changed and people click either "Accept and Show", "Accept and Hide", or "Leave Group", and maybe add "Report Name Change" in case it's really bad or abusive. You can't cancel it either, it'll stay in notifications until you decide what you do.
The very small chance of a bad faith actor abusing this is not enough to make up for something far more people could benefit from, considering the only other option is starting a new group, pushing for people to join the new one, kicking everyone out of the old, etc. If a name change hid from profiles (so no griefing could be done that way) and you were forced to select what to do in the name change, it could alleviate the stress of the current method without allowing for someone to abuse the name change.

If you implement it, we need to be able which group was which and able to track the change somehow.
I don't wanna join a group called "My Little Pony" and a few days later the group to be renamed to an adult name...

misstoriblack Resident That might be possible to some degree if the group UUID doesn't change, even now (though it would require a scripted object set to the group in question currently).
In setting this up similarly to the way account name changes work would be the preferable way for this to be implemented as it would prevent unnecessary script re-work/re-configuration for group-related functionality in devices that are in common use such as group invite devices, group-only gift givers, group discount vendors, and scripted systems with group related white/black listing functions like security systems and random gift givers.
If it were to be set up similarly to how changing an account name works then it would be reasonable for group names be exposed to LSL scripts the same way we can now do with avatar names because of LL giving users the ability to change them. This kind of function is something that has been requested for a very long time now and if the group UUID does not change (just as is the case with changing account names) it shouldn't present much difficulty to implement (given that it really wasn't difficult to do with account names either). The biggest difference is that we likely wouldn't have any need to have prior group names used stored in a database, but a script to tracking group name changes would be as easy as simply storing the current group name and then comparing this stored group name to the current group name at a set interval, send an alert message and update the stored group name data when a change to the current group name is detected.

I would not be upset if this cost money, just like renaming avatars (maybe, half as much?) — I don't want groups being renamed on a whim, but I
do
want the ability to do so.Load More
