Account beneficiary

This may be our second life but our first life always runs out. It’s never infinite. I propose a feature where a beneficiary is named so that when that accounts creator passes away, it is then turned over to that beneficiary with the ability to add a date of death. I am a part of several art communities that already do similar to this. If this feature was around, it would’ve saved the valley regions from going off-line.

Remember that everything having to do with wills, etc., varies by country and, in the US, by state. My own answer is leaving instructions with a trusted RL friend (who is not in SL) of exactly what to do to close things down, including a few inworld friends to notify. Having email addresses of those SL friends is very helpful.

Yes, I think that is necessary since the beneficiary could also profit from the creations of the deceased should they desire to.

This is somewhat already possible under current Second LIfe policy, but is not straightforward or streamlined. I suggest reading the wiki on this https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Death_and_other_worries_outside_Second_Life

Bumping Pixels Thats a problem when you never make a will. Not everyone is in that frame set(I'm not).
Bumping Pixels
Laufiair Hexicola Well now you are! :)
To be fair this feature request would do nothing for someone not in the same mindset since it would require setting up similarly.

Bumping Pixels No since for a will you would really have to sit down and think about who's going to get all your stuff when you die. Here you would name a person that would get your SL account and that would be it.
I'm not thinking about it, I'm replying.
My estate owner's will was on his pc and his roommate tossed it so no one got anything and everything went in the trash(I only know because I was named but now there's no proof even if I was able to get his death certificate).

Laufiair Hexicola Where I live you (can & should but don't always have to) register wills with a county court clerk, where a copy is retained in record for later execution upon presentation of a death certificate.
Not everyone does this, and not everyone thinks to create a will in the first place. It's a part of life that most people feel very uncomfortable thinking about. The way I look at it is that I want who I leave behind to have the smoothest process possible untangling my personal affairs and accounts, so I put a lot of effort into covering those bases for my inevitable demise.
In addition to a will, people like me also consider things like servers, hosted software, etc. Frameworks like this helped me tremendously when I began my end of life planning https://github.com/potatoqualitee/eol-dr and I try to spread awareness about it and the values of this sort of forethought any chance I get (this is one!)

That would be illegal.

Yeah, I agree this needs to be simplified. I’ve been asking for clarification for years. Especially for business level accounts for business residents. I should be able to leave a business account and it’s relevant IP to another user in SL not my spouse (who already says he doesn’t want it because he wouldn’t know what to do with it)

There should be a simplified process to notify friends or other designees of our death. Wills aren't necessarily the best way to convey such instructions. Instructions thst have nothing to do with assets are usually found on a separate document for the executor to carry out.
Proof or death should be given, but that should be sufficient rather than needing a copy of the will. This should be arrangeable in SL.

I agree. It's currently a difficult and complicated process. It could be simplified by assigning a beneficiary while you are still alive.

There is a process already in place to will your account to someone if you pass away. You, as the beneficiary would have to provide proof, of course.
Elmhill Resident
Rowan Amore it's an incredibly difficult and complicated process. It could be simplified by assigning a beneficiary while you are still alive. Trust me I'm in the middle of the process now and it's a nightmare.

Elmhill Resident. That is exactly what the link I provided tells you. You assign a beneficiary. Since there may be actually money involved, ir would be an asset that, unfortunately, has to go.through the same legal process as any other asset. Perhaps they own an SL store that brings in 10s of thousands per month. LL has to abide by legal standards when transferring that account to you.

Rowan Amore It is common for financial institutions to allow account holders to name beneficiaries for accounts. I have several such accounts. Adding a beneficiary who will inherit the account upon death of the accountholder is much simpler than drafting a will, and it costs nothing and just takes a few minutes.
