Second Life has a vast collection of Communities with different themes and styles etc. Roleplay is a popular activity on Second Life.
In one community you might Roleplay as a World War 2 fighter pilot and in another people are doing Gorean roleplay and another you are playing as an anime character. Each community you might be a different gender, completely different appearance etc and you want a name that matches the avatar and community you are currently in.
Appearance wise in SL we are pretty flexible, able to change our look on a dime, but we are not able to change our name to match the community we are in and the role we are playing.
Many residents turn to hover text as a solution for this but hover text clashes with display names and in practice it creates confusion and puts so much text on the screen that it looks visually unappealing.
I think it would be great if we had the ability to set a 'roleplay name'(? not sure how you should call it). The name would not show up in say the friends list but would show above your head instead of your display name and in the local chat again in place of the display name.
Perhaps it could be a group setting, such that land you visit that has that group this name will apply - This would make it functionally similar to discord in which you can set your name on a per-server basis.
