Let chat transcripts be kept online

Rather than trusting the SL Viewer to save chat transcripts, I would love for them to be saved in SL.

There are technical issues here too. Chat is delivered unreliably (udp) as such the chat that you recieve might not always match the caht that the server recieves, like wise the ordering of chat messages on the server may not match that perceived on the client. These are proabbyl minor issues but need to be considered.
How does this differ from saving the logs to a google drive or other shared folder today? What is the problem that you are trying to solve?

In short, potentially losing the chat transcripts whenever I need to reinstall everything on my computer.

Vulcan Viper saving to google drive/one drive (pick your poison) would provide the same resilience and more flexible. You can also backup your settings and other things there too. It would not impose additional obligations on LL with regard to personally identifying data, nor ortorhe storage costs. It would also work for all you accounts (both alts in SL and OpenSim accounts if you have them). The other advantage of google drive (and I believe the others, though I do not use them) is that you do not need to do anything; you write to the designated "drive" folder on your local machine, and it "automagically" syncs them to the cloud (and to any other devices that you want)

I agree with Anastasia's perspective.
There is also the probability of conflicts of interest. Person A wants their chats saved in SL but Person B does not want their chats saved in SL. So then what happens to a chat between Person A and Person B?
Vulcan Viper
Aylin Moonshadow Then what about making it optional?

There is a huge privacy issue to be considered here. Would you really want all your private conversations to be stored on a company server? Would you want LL employees to be able to read your chats? Would you want your chats to be subpoena-able? Would you want someone who phishes your login info to be able not only to steal your credit card and lindens but also to read your private chats?
Currently, although your chats are not encrypted, at least they are safe on your computer--one single known location, locked behind your computer user account.

There is a lot to unpack here, at first glance, but I will try.
Could the first two questions not be solved by encrypting the chat between client and server?
Also, logging into Second Life already requires a 2FA code, at least some of the time.
Regarding your question about subpoena...how could that be used against me, as long as I do not do anything illegal?
Lastly, I would offer that having to keep my chat transcripts on my computer is one of the reasons I lost them at least once. So, safe...?

Can you please provide some examples of how you would like this to work? This will help us to review and respond to your request more effectively. Thanks!

How about offering a setting in the SL account that determines if the resident wants transcripts to be saved on the server?
Then again, if LL already saves transcripts, as claimed by at least one of the people replying here...
Mister Acacia
I have been told that LL do retain transcripts for a short period (a small number of days) in case they are needed for governance, but I think keeping them indefinitely for every account would require not insignificant storage resources. Perhaps LL can consider something like that for one of the Premium subscription tiers to offset the cost.
Alternatively, if the goal is to access transcripts from multiple locations (computers/viewers), the local files can be saved to a cloud-type storage, like dropbox, and each viewer set to use that location

Oh, they definitely already save your chat transcripts. They just don't let you see them.

If that is true, then so much for the subpoena issue.
