Option to Suppress Group Chats in the Official Viewer
tracked

The current lack of control over group chat participation in the official Second Life Viewer severely impacts usability, especially for power users who rely on group memberships for essential access to regions or features. Unlike third-party viewers, the official viewer does not offer any options to suppress group chats, resulting in a frustrating and disruptive user experience.
DETAILS
• When joining a group in Second Life, users are automatically enrolled in all group chat sessions without the ability to opt out or suppress them for individual groups.
• Many groups require paid memberships, which are often necessary to access specific regions or areas. Temporarily leaving and rejoining groups to avoid chat disruptions is not a viable workaround due to the potentially high rejoining fees.
• Group roles cannot address this issue since they are managed by group owners, not individual members, leaving members without control over their own experience.
• Third-party viewers offer a simple checkbox feature to disable automatic group chat participation for individual groups, providing granular control and a better user experience. This functionality is notably absent in the official viewer.
IMPACT
This limitation forces users to tolerate constant disruptions, especially when they must maintain membership in multiple groups for access or utility. The lack of such a basic feature in the official viewer puts it at a disadvantage compared to alternatives, directly affecting usability for power users and casual users alike. It is imperative to implement an option for users to suppress group chat participation to align the official viewer with modern expectations and improve the overall user experience.

I couldn't agree more, especially after trying the new web browser version based on the official viewer. It reminded me why I prefer using Firestorm--there are just too many distractions with those group chats. I honestly don’t know how anyone can focus with all that going on.

You can already disable group chats on the group pane.

Darien Caldwell In third-party viewers, yes. But there is no such option in the official viewer. The "Receive group notices" checkbox only suppresses group notices, but not group chats.

I use the official viewer, and I’ve limited notifications to flashes on the tool bar. I can’t stand bells or pop ups for chats. I turned those off in Preferences, too. I’m able to concentrate on my SL experience without constant interruptions. I’ll go back and read the group chats when I have the time or inclination.

Incorrect, on the group UI you can disable notices and instant messages (group chats)

More users would then use sl viewer if that was fixed….

All these group chats I have no intrested in at all, popping up all the time, is the main reason I do not use the sl viewer very much. I never join groups for the chats, yet it is forced on to me.
