I can not build in a way that allows for daylight and shadows on mainland without someone else's skybox interfering with my experience.

Have you tried installing your own Environment on the parcel to angle the sun so that the shadows miss your land?
You can also lower your draw distance because the shadows will only be seen for object inside your draw distance.

It's a good idea... I could remove the invasive shade but in any case my guests would resent it and would take the trouble to do the same. Better for the owner to directly control the specifications of their environments to eliminate the impact at the source.

I thought shadows weren't rendered if it was >512m away. Now Im afraid of whose land my skybox is affecting

I derender everything that affects my shadows and experience. Find one item that is affecting your shadows, extend your draw distance to max and do area search for the owner. Highlight everything and blacklist. Set your draw distance back to where you had it. Repeat for anything else in your draw distance view. That is the only work around I have come up with until LL comes up with a solution.
