Volumetric Clouds, Particle System

Right now clouds are a 2d map that gets manipulated by sky settings. It has been this way for 20 years? The current state of the art is Volumetric - Using this for clouds would enhance skies, and could be used to overhaul the billboard 2d particle system as well.

This makes me miss the particle cloud layer that used to exist on simulators, but it only appeared when you went up high enough.
Although the more I think of it, the more it may have not been a built in feature and instead a weather system of some sort 🤔
Either way +1 for more realistic built in weather.

Yeah, there have been a couple of talks about this with the Lindens. They don't feel it's wise to try update WL since there's a lot of "spaghetti" in the code. it seems the people who worked on it aren't with LL anymore, I think. They felt it might be better to replace the Windlight completely with new rendering system. Not a small task, and they're not sure when might be a good time to do that.
They have thought about using this. https://ebruneton.github.io/precomputed_atmospheric_scattering/
But this has no volumetric clouds in it, and it could be a good place to work on a cloud shader like you'd see in Minecraft's modding community.
