Nova Albion Trolley
tracked

Wondering if we can get this running again please? There are plenty of examples in all the grid of running, working systems. Including the one in Bay City! Historic Nova Albion sure would be more complete with it.
We have the tracks, we have the skylines, we even have the trolley. Just needs a new engine pretty please?

So neat Qie! Thank you!

Just an update: The "Trolley (Ben replica)" is now running in an experimental mode and it's looking pretty promising, so if it doesn't run amok I may soon arrange for it to relaunch itself if it detects a dearth of trolleys on the track. By all means let me know if there are any problems. (It runs with a single script and uses keyframed motion, so it shouldn't have any measurable lag impact.)
Again, this is just a temporary stopgap until an official replacement is developed. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with that replacement.
One note: I didn't have a copy of Ben's trolley build, so I made one with a script, and painted it with the original textures I identified from cache. At first I used my own prims but because this is nothing I created I instead cloned the one Ben Linden-created prim I found in the ancient Clanis telehub, which is at least giving credit where it's due. Presumably Moles will have more "official" means of using his original build for the replacement (but if not, I'm happy to contribute this clone, or anything else that could be useful).

I'd love to see Nova Albion get the support needed to accomplish this!

Thank you to Qie for making this replica! He is now working on some scripting to try and get it going. But of course this is all temporary.

Thank you for the consideration Abnor. I understand workload more than you know. In the meantime there is already interest within the community to get something going until time is right for the moles to get it running.

After looking into the situation of the trolley and what would be required to get it running and operational, it is a bigger fix than we anticipated. Because if this it doesn't appear to be something we can conceivably work into our project schedule at this time. That's not to say we will never address it, but we don't have the resources available at the moment to address it properly, and being a historic part of early SL infrastructure we don't want to do it until we can do it right.
I will leave it as being tracked for now, but I don't anticipate any change in that status for the immediate future.

I am a longtime parcel owner / resident of Nova Albion with deep LSL expertise with vehicles/movement/keyframed motion, and know of a couple other currently active Nova residents who do similar work. I'd be willing to contribute time and skills to make the trolley run again if it's possible to coordinate with moles/DPW for street land access.

As I recall things started to go wrong with the Dore-Luna trolley in the summer of 2016, so whatever broke it may have been some physics update around that time (I'm not a scripter so I can only be vague about this). The breaking of the trolleys manifested mostly in various "derailments" of the sort that suggested that the trolley actually ran along the overhead wire rather than along the rails as such (see image). Hoping this information may help a more knowledgeable scripter to figure out the problem.

Certainly Abnor! The original trolley was created and designed by Nigel Linden. We currently do not have the original piece by Nigel, but a copy from Ben Linden. It is on display here...http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Grignano/168/200/27 And it has original scripts in it.
The wires were also from Ben and Nigel and Michael as well as the stop prim. It ran from Luna to Dore up to about 2011, (I'm sure I am mistaken here) when a new server was introduced. Marianne would have more info on what the issue was.
There are unscripted boxes on the ground by Dyna Mole I suspect maybe an attempt to get it running. I only see these from Sistiana to Luna though.
Keep in mind the portions going through the actual hub in Barcola are grouped to City Slickers.
We had a resident create a ticket on it back in 2015 and 16 but seems to have been lost.
I would also like to ad a link to some Polaroids that were taken of Nova Albion's early days. They really show the rich history of Nova Albion and the trolley. Which is why it should really be back on it's route.
They can be found here http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Barcola/217/23/25
