Abandoned Land is a blight, in-and-of itself.. an unnaturally blank patch of land looks off, out of place.
In real life, when land is abandoned and not cared for, grass with grow, weeds will take root, forgotten yard-sale and campaign signs, bits of cardboard, old tires and other litter finds it's way to the parcel and lingers. Folks without homes will build little camps, neighborhood ruffians build forts.
Let's liven up these 'dead' spaces, with a little tongue-in-cheek way to say "this land is abandoned".

Instead of inventory that places plants and rocks, the occasional critter etc.
Abandoned land shouldn't be hidden and made to vanish, it should be made more obvious and preferably unsettling. Like homes derelict plots in SimCity would go black, or the corruption in Terraria.
The land should bait someone to come and resurrect it in a far more obvious and unavoidable way. It should be an inherently unfriendly place. Decoration should be in sharp contrast to the flowing greenery of mainland. Mobs should spawn relentlessly and attack anyone who enters or attempt to fly over (making use of all the shiny new combat LSL we just got). Vast tracts of abandoned land should border on impenetrable the deeper the user gets.
Encourage residents to claim abandoned land by reducing teir payments on it for a period.

Our system does not currently include access to an account inventory for adding content to land in a particular state, nor is the action of abandoning a parcel limited by estate. For private estates, abandoning a parcel enables a clean ownership transfer for new tenants or other usage. For the mainland estate, this does mean there are empty areas waiting for new owners.
We are currently assessing how to utilize or offer abandoned parcels on the mainland - perhaps you have spoted parcels for sale by Linden accounts, or a new park or other feature. We will mark your request as tracked for future consideration of how we approach the leftovers from parcel requests. ;-)
