Can we finally get rid of obsolete worldmap tiles?

Go to the map in any viewer (except the CoolVL Viewer which does NOT show tiles for invalid regions). Type something like Pompeii and see how ancient map tiles are still there. For sims long gone. Sims that have been moved. Etc.
Ghost map tiles have existed from the day we moved into the cloud. Can we finally get rid of them?

While I don't like the multitude of ghost map tiles and I wish there was a better solution that wouldn't require keeping them, I'd like to point out why this is happening.
A lot of changes were made to several services for the "uplift". As a result the world map updates broke twice within a year in 2020 and 2021. You can find some details about it here:
This was a big problem at the time. First only the "big zoom out" tiles went missing that show entire continents at once. Then eventually all zoom levels broke and there were no daily map updates at all. The only thing worse than the map tiles not updating is if they get discarded and we're left with no world map at all. And that was the case.
First they fixed this in April 2021 after more than 5 months, and everything seemed to be working fine, but I eventually noticed that the map tile updates started failing very soon after the fix. So this resulted in the same issue again by October 2021 and it took some time until LL fixed the map again, this time in a stable way, but they also disabled the discarding of old map tiles. This is why you can see more and more ghost tiles on the map ever since.
This can be very annoying if it is happening next to your estate and not ideal for cartographers and sim hoppers either but it is very important that if the world map tile updates happen to fail we won't be left without a map which is crucial on mainland continents and connected estates, especially for navigation. The permanent features of each region will be still visible as well as the larger landmasses when zoomed out. This is the point of the ghost map tiles.
I support the idea of remaking the world map from scratch in a much more useful way and I have suggested it in the past too. It would be great to have a robust map that can highlight roads, railroads, protected waterways, overlays for private parcels that could be used instead of inworld sky signs, etc. Also a whole new renderer that could show sculpted and mesh objects properly instead of blobs. The world map is very limited and outdated so these changes are much needed. Just keep in mind that is the only way to go forward and not to simply elimimate the ghost map tiles now. That only makes things worse again if the updates start to fail, and it takes a lot of time to fix.

AlettaMondragon Resident Thanks for explaining. Thumbs up. I'm sure many of us still don't understand, and it's possible (perhaps) some of us are talking about different things without realizing it. I do agree that ghost map tiles probably is not one of the biggest issues on SL; there are definitely other things I would much rather see fixed... and could fill the rest of this comment with brief titles and not have enough room.
There's also a chance I wasn't on SL when all of this was going on. I took a years-long break for a while and I missed a lot of what went on with SL from about 2011 to 2018. During that period I only visited occasionally just to keep up with friends and attend a mega-event here and there, so perhaps some of this stuff escaped my notice because I wasn't on SL hours a day as was my habit before then.
I commented here to support the original post, because well, nobody likes something that doesn't work properly. But as you state, there are many things on SL (and RL) that don't work right, and prioritization would seem a constant requirement in both. If I had to chose between ghosted map tiles and say for example... sounds and gestures loading quickly like they once did... I'd choose the later. Same goes for mesh, sculpties, avatars so a dozen people don't stand around naked while their clothing loads oh so slowly. (Waiting for the comments from people saying they actually like that "feature"). ; }
But yeah, I appreciate you trying to explain it all even if I still don't understand why such a thing would be such a difficult fix. But then... I admit I don't know what all goes on behind the scenes or how the code is written, so I'll take that as reality and recognize that sometimes one just has to live with what is too difficult to change. Because admittedly, I don't think ghosted map regions are a make-or-break deal when it comes to using SL. (However a gesture sometimes taking a full 60 seconds to play after it's triggered does not impress. Totally different subject, I know. Just sayin'.)

Eren Padar Why these things take so long or forever is beyond us all. When we kept nagging them about the world map in 2021 they just kept saying their best developer was working on it, and that was it until they finally did it. (And then the whole thing again that year.) Some bugs and inworld issues never get fixed though. We need to keep poking them to do these things then eventually some might happen.

I fully support it ... I have literally hundreds of ghosted regions sitting around. I once was told it's because the grid map has been scripted back in 2002 or something and is not really compatible with Amazon servers but if that's the case, how about creating something new from scratch? YES, in my humble dwagony opinion: get rid of NO LONGER EXISTING map tiles. If they are obsolete and no longer there... why should they be on the CURRENT map?
(It's nice to be asked BTW; that is appreciated. But this one seems kind of obvious.)
The only real alternative is to have an "archival map" option to show history... but how many lands have been over-written by new lands over the years? And of what actual value is such out-of-date history? One does not drive down a highway with their eyes constantly focused on the rear-view mirror. ;D

Eren Padar You can see my explanation above. It seems like this situation is not at all as obvious as you thought. One thing to be mindful of is if you don't have enough information about something, don't jump into things like "YES, in my humble dwagony opinion: get rid of NO LONGER EXISTING map tiles."

AlettaMondragon Resident Five hours ago you reply to a comment I made ten months ago. I'd say you're a little late.
You may wish to be mindful that as users, our opinions are based on what we see and experience... and our feedback intended to help. Without the insider information you have, all we can go on is what we experience. We don't "jump into" anything; we express thought on things we have observed for YEARS. Most companies consider such feedback as absolute gold... whether it's positive or negative. It tracks the satisfaction pulse of their user base. If Linden lab had no such feedback, they'd wonder why people are leaving SL in droves without saying a word, and nothing to go on. Criticizing such feedback serves no beneficial purpose and just creates additional customer dissatisfaction.
You may wish to consider that regardless of the difficulty of solving this problem... it remains a problem and annoying to users. Making excuses (however valid) doesn't solve the problem. There's a reason I replied in a "humbly dwagon post": to acknowledge that we as users don't have ALL the information.
So suggestion: just post your explanation and leave it at that.
I worked as a RL professional coder for some 4 decades. What I read from your post is another example of LL "half fixing" a problem, and finding out their fix didn't work. That is another major complaint of users: LL trying to do a job quickly instead of well. This happened recently with the rushed PBR incident (which was so disastrous Philip Rosedale himself issued a public apology... much to his credit). It's happened too many times in the past. Rather than rushing through a fix, better that LL take the time to write a fix that will work and is extensively tested on multiple environments and computer setups before releasing to the public. That way you don't lose unpublished numbers of frustrated customers... and wind up with posts like we see here.
This is my real-life-experience based, not-so-humbly opinion. It's how GOOD coding is done.
I read and recognize your "comment feedback", but even with your explanation I stand by my original comment. There IS a way to correct this problem... if someone takes the required time to do so.

Eren Padar Sorry, I have just come across this ticket while looking for something else, if I'd seen it earlier I would have added my "insider info" already. It is not so much insider info actually, a lot of us kept talking about it on the Forums back then. It is a thing that I use the world map in a way that I notice anomalies earlier than most other people, but when these problems came out on a large scale everyone noticed the map wasn't working.
So I'm not saying that you shouldn't have an opinion just because you don't have the full picture, I only suggested that you shouldn't be so enthusiastic about removing something just because it's ugly and apparently useless, sadly in SL there are a few of these ugly things that hold things together like old glue in huge gaps.
I agree with your approach but it is not really realistic with LL. It took about a year for them to fix the world map updates, in fact they said they had to rewrite the code entirely and allegedly only one developer worked on this. While they were working on this soooo hard, sailing and flying were nearly impossible other than doing our usual routes. People who make maps couldn't work on their projects. New parts of Bellisseria and private estates were opened but without proper map tiles. Those of us who also use the map with its frequent updates to spot certain anomalies inworld had absolutely no way to detect those problems.
Making a new world map system with modern features and more reliability would definitely take more than one developer, talent, a lot of testing and overall a lot of time. To me it doesn't look like it will ever be a priority at LL because they have "much more important" projects all the time and they skeleton crew everything else, badly. This is why those ghost tiles are more important than anyone might think, so that we won't be without a world map completely for a year if it breaks again. Hopefully... actually there is no guarantee that the tiles would't be discarded, for example if they actually update but to a faulty blank image instead of the map tile. I really think the only way to resolve this is to make a whole new map system from scratch.
