Region Communication Delivery Failures
Sascha Littlepaws
Users who enter the Patatina region are experiencing persistent communication delivery issues affecting private messages, teleport offers, object delivery, and online/offline presence status. This has been ongoing for more than a month and appears to affect a large percentage of users who visit the region
The issue continues after users leave Patatina and is usually only resolved after relogging. Weekly scheduled Linden Lab restarts have not resolved the problem, and the behavior has been observed on both third-party viewers and the official Second Life viewer. It is a very high-traffic region
(Support ticket #2506835, "After investigation, it appears as though this issue may be a bug or error which would be best handled through our bug report system using Second Life's new feedback portal")

Hi Sascha, I have an idea that this could be the same issue reported in some other regions, but need some more info to determine if it's distinct or not.
Could you point to some example incidents where an incoming IM to an agent on Patatina failed? The basic details we'd want are:
- Name of the agent sending the message
- Name that the region that the message was sent from
- Approximate time of the message
- Name of the avatar on Patatina who failed to receive the message
With this information, we can go into the logs and have a good idea of what triggered the failure.
Thanks!

Maestro Linden I appreciate your response. Typically users will eventually leave the region because they are being notified externally to SL that their messages are being lost, but due to the nature of this particular location (adult themed) I'd like to respect the privacy of the users' legacy names
I can add, however, that it is almost as if user online status change never quite reach users within the Patatina region either, product delivery / received folder updates, etc., basically the whole gambit of communications external to the region in question as if in its own bubble, until one of two things happens:
- The user logs out of Patatina and logs back into Patatina, upon which messages they missed will appear, products they were sent arrive, and user statuses are updated in their Contacts list, but the communication and delivery failures continue for as long as they are present within the region
-or-
- The user leaves Patatina, logs out, logs back in, upon which, being that they are now external to the affected region entirely, they receive all missing communications, user online statuses are real-time, products are delivered, and their SL experience is returned to normal until they visit Patatina again at a later period
So though I wish it were just messages alone, it is pretty much anything that could be quantified as an update, be it direct messages, online statuses, inventory updates, received folder content changes, etc., and it is something I have only seen occurring in this particular region so consistently that you could poll any single user there and they could probably add to this experience with their own as well, which I suppose is great in terms of issues as it affects everyone who enters and has for months now
Thank you for your help in even reviewing. I'll probably advise the hangout owner that they should move to a separate region for now, but I thought it would be useful to report it as well

Sascha Littlepaws: Thanks for the detailed description of the issue. I see error messages from Patatina today, from the instance prior to the 3PM SLT crash, which are consistent with the issue I suspected. I have gathered logs of this incident for our ongoing investigation into the issue.

Just wanted to weigh in and say that conferences have been broken for over a year now with these issues. It can happen on any region (worse on busier ones but not exclusive to).
Every single one of my friends has the same problem, it’s just part of everyone’s experience now I think.
I think 1 in every 3 conferences is broken if I was to average it, in that either people don’t join or it includes people that you didn’t invite. My friends and i always joke about who will be the surprise guest in the next conference.
If I remember correctly it was noted by LL at the time so we’ve just been patiently waiting for a fix. But yeah just wanted to back up Bodhi and let you know that this is a grid-wide issue that has rendered conferences mostly inoperative for a long time now.

Testing further, I do see IM delivery failures to agents logged into 'Desert Moon'. Aside from ad hoc conference and group chat failures in all cases, IMs from friends in remote regions are being routed as offline messages.
I'm still not able to reproduce the arrival of extra/unexpected avatars after creating a text conference.

Hi Bodhi Osbourne can you elaborate on the steps to reproduce this issue?
For the case where you try to start a conference chat with 2 other people but get a different set of 15 people, how are you starting the chat? Are the 15 other agents which accidentally appear in your conference chat in your friends list, nearby, or are they total strangers?
I tried this, and am not immediately hitting any issues on the same region with Second Life Release 26.1.0.22641522367:
- Login with 3 viewers: UserA, UserB, UserC, each to a different start location
- UserA: Go to region 'Desert Moon' (which currently has 48 avatars present)
- UserA: Open 'People' -> 'Friends', Ctrl-select UserB and UserC, and select "IM" from the right click context menu
- Observe the 'Conversations' floater now has a new 'Multi-person chat', which shows UserA, UserB, UserC when expanded
- UserA: send a message to 'Multi-person chat'
- Observe that UserB & UserC see the new conference appear message from UserA, and that they both see UserA, UserB, UserC in the participants list
- UserB, UserC: send messages to the chat
- Observe the messages appear to all 3 users
- UserB, UserC: go to UserA's busy region and send more messages
- Observe the messages appear to all 3 users

Maestro Linden thanks for the reply.. This isnt limited to this server alone. It is always at places that are very busy. Sometimes u might start a confernedce and no ones in it.. You then manually add them all again... at some point what you type, you cant see but other can... leaning the affected server and returning fixes that temporraily.
We usually end up creatiung text channels in discord just to communicat as a group of friends.
The other issue we have here also is that when we are there friends not there (at other places) see us as offline. Not only that we cant communicate with them and they cant communicate with us. If we relog and say loig into our home location we get a rush of messages that people might have attempted to send us while at the busy venue.

I start the chat my selecting multiple people from my friend list and then right click and choose send IM

Maestro Linden If there server crashes and comes back... all the chat conferences then work for a time, but at some stage they go back to all being broken.. this also happens at the place called Scordhing sands... its well known by all people that chat is broken there

Bodhi Osbourne: Alright, I was able to reproduce the failure to receive conference chat messages in that particular, region and was able to find a few other regions across the grid with the same issue. The nature of the bug is that your avatar's presence in the region isn't established properly, which causes that secondary symptom of regular IMs from friends in remote regions being treated as though you were offline.
The one thing I haven't been able to reproduce is the appearance of extra/unexpected avatars in a conference at creation time. If you encounter that again, could you file a new/separate bug? The details that would be helpful for this report include:
- Time of the conference creation
- A viewer log, sent via email (instructions below)
- Names of the people you intended to add (this information could be okay to include in the email if you prefer)
- Names of the surprise members (this information could be okay to include in the email if you prefer)
To send the viewer logs, please:
- Exit the viewer
- Navigate to the viewer logs folder and zip up the logs folder. This page tells you where to find the logs folder: https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/how-to-report-a-bug-r224/
- Email the zip file to bug-attachments@lindenlab.com and reference the issue name in the email subject line.
Your help is appreciated.

Maestro Linden that’s an odd one. It doesn’t happen every time but it does happen and usually when that happens the people that you want to chat with aren’t in the chat but other people are even people you don’t know might be in there and you have to manually add the people you want to have a chat with the other people don’t get their messages though their names are just there but they’re not actually there if that’s able to be understood. I’m not sure. I’m explaining it right but I mean the other people don’t get any other messaging it’s like theyre ghosts.

Maestro Linden Just sent the logs
Maestro Linden
Bodhi Osbourne: Thanks, I see the email with logs. Now we just need your bug report with the other 3 points of data about the issue.
Bodhi Osbourne
Maestro Linden I think I’ve done it. I’m just a little confused.
