Groups Not Self Destructing When Only One Member Left
tracked

I have been the last Member left in two groups (secondlife:///app/group/1e47de60-434f-810c-f2ea-fcc08ea4b274/about and secondlife:///app/group/5234638f-3981-9170-9e6c-6c51b2ab2d8f/about) for several weeks now and they have not self destructed as described in the SL Knowledge Base:
"After 48 hours with a membership of one or zero, a group is disbanded automatically."
However I have recently found in the SL Forums where Monty Linden stated on May 4th of this year:
"This was changed in the 2023 as part of BUG-234025. Single-member groups now hang around. You should be able to leave the group and it will be cleaned up in a few days. Some of the documentation and other hints is likely wrong still."
Monty also suggests the last member leave the Group. However, just as the person who created that Thread found, I am unable to leave these groups either.
This situation needs fixed. I should not be needing to contact Support in order to have a group disbanded. Also the documentation needs to be updated to reflect whatever the fix is.
Thank You

Adding too the complexity if an Owner wants to disband a group they first have to go through the process of ejecting everyone. Simply put we need a 'Disband Group' function.

When this gets fixed, it might be a good idea to warn the remaining member account that the group is about to be disbanded, with maybe a month before the actual execution date. This wouldn't need to be an ongoing practice, just a one-time run through groups that would be affected, just because it's been a while since the auto clean-up was in effect so it's possible some users may have "learned" that single-member groups are safe.

I got curious and spent the L$ to create a new group. I never invited anyone into it. It is just me. And 20 days later, the group still exists.

There is a flip side to this that should be considered:
When a group is disbanded (or a region shut down) that name is up for grabs. Someone else could then form a group totally contrary to the goals and agendas of the original group.
Shutting down a group would only make sense if that name were blocked from being used again on SL. Otherwise, it's just as easy to leave members in the group, with a note in the profile that the group is no longer active. That would seem the better option.
When we shut down our group and left SL that's exactly what we did: we put a note in the profile that the group was no longer active on SL... as well as where members could find us (we moved to an alternate virtual world).
So there are advantages to leaving a group existing with one (or a few) member(s).

Eren Padar Would need a Linden to pop in and verify (I am not up for digging out the documentation right now) but my understanding is that group name can never be reused.

I wonder how many groups that refuse to die are cluttering the Lab's databases? And restricting peoples ability to add a new group? Fix definitely needed
Eren Padar
Bavid Dailey It's quite possible the original group founder does not wish other people to use the original group name... for many reasons. Maybe the group had a reputation of being family-friendly, and an adult sex group takes it over. hat an insult to the memory of the original group. (I saw this actually happen.)
The best way to prevent such name hijacking is so simply leave the original group in place with just a few members and all activities (including JOIN) shut down, along with explanation in the Group Profile.
Bavid Dailey
Eren PadarBest way to stop such hijacking is to never allow a group name to be used, surely

Bavid Dailey Perhaps you meant "never allow a group name to be re-used". And I would agree... but two decades of experience indicate that's usually not how LL works. I simply offered the most basic reason to not totally close a group down. Leaving it open but inactive with an explanation in the "About" field and no further joins allowed is an immediate and sure solution that already exists. It also allows others to instantly check and see if that group name is already in use... as well as providing a bit of history that such a group at one time existed.

I was the one who created the two groups referenced in this report, and when it was decided to disband the groups, experienced the results as stated above - after many weeks of waiting as the ONLY member of the groups, they remained in my groups list. I passed ownership on to Aylin and left the groups myself, to test for whether it was me, or that there was a problem from the LL side, leaving her stuck being the only group member, and being unable herself to leave and to see the groups disbanded. I am sure we are not alone in being afflicted with this disease! Needs attention!
