Some IMs not delivered while chatting, then they get delivered offline.

Chatting with people and all seem normal (no idea you missed messages), then I get the IMs which match the what would had been said around mid conversation delivered at a later time when relogging (or even in email with the setting enabled).

Talking with the server team, we have a general theory about why this is happening. If an IM is sent to an agent who is changing regions frequently, the IM might be sent to a sim that the agent is no longer connected to. There's a message-forwarding mechanism that's supposed to handle this case, but it appears to be failing sometimes, causing the message to be delivered as though the recipient were offline. I don't believe that viewer version would have any impact on this bug.

Well, I'm sailing, boating and flying a lot and it is happening so often that I have always conseidered it as an "unexpected feature" more than a bug.
Now, for this feedback i've been able to reproduce it with a simple script that sends an instant message to me every one second, taking a boat and going for a short tour. I took 220 seconds before the issue happened. The instant messages are numbered and I did never get #220 as an IM but had it as an offline message.

Offline message received by IM :
The object 'Object' has sent you a message from Second Life:
2024-11-20T20:27:50.784240Z - 220

Location when it happened : crossing from Blake Sea - Swab to Blake Sea - Lanyard on 2024-11-20 at 12:27:50 SLT
Script sending the instant message :
integer cpt;
default
{
state_entry()
{
llSetTimerEvent(1.0);
}
timer()
{
llInstantMessage(llGetOwner(), llGetTimestamp() + " - " + (string)(cpt++));
}
}
Edit : I must add that in 18 years in SL, I've never seen it happening other than when I was in movement and crossing region borders.

Hi Eiluned Resident I'm having trouble reproducing this issue - I'm seeing that regular IMs are delivered to an online avatar properly.
How do you get the bug to trigger? Do the agents need to be in a particular location, or perform some action (region crossing, etc.) during the conversation?
Eiluned Resident
Maestro Linden I just am logged in as normal, chatting with people, it doesn't happen so often, but within two months it did happen three times, not sure when it started or what conditions are needed to reproduce it, maybe my connection sucks, maybe long hours being connected
will keep my eyes open and I could provide latest time it happened to me, or future ones if it helps
Maestro Linden
Eiluned Resident: If this happens again, can you please add the following details to this report?
- The time of the failed IM
- The name of the person who sent you the IM, and the name of the region they were in at the time
- The name of the region you were in at the tome
- Part of the IM's text (enough to differentiate it from other messages that were sent correctly around the same time)
With this information, we should be able to figure out why the IM was misdelivered as though you were offline .

Maestro Linden I've had this occasionally happen to me as well, where someone sends me an IM that goes through to email as an offline message, even though I'm online and inworld.
Like Eiluned, I'm not sure of the exact conditions, but I do feel like region crossings/teleports might have played a part in at least some of those messages going astray. Maybe the server sometimes "forgets" that I'm online during the hand-off to another, particularly if there's high latency?
Eiluned Resident
Maestro Linden I will try to report things, but as messages did come over days after I might not remember fully details, there been times were this happened, logged in and out a couple of times, and after the second login they arrived, that might be even the second day after the chat affected
Maestro Linden
Erik Mondrian: Yes, I think what we're seeing with these mis-delivered IMs is that the message sender's simulator is failing to locate the recipient in-world properly, causing the IM to be delivered as though they were offline. It seems likely that moving between regions around the time of the IM could play a part. If you see this again, could you please add the details of an incident (see my previous comment for which details we need)?

Maestro Linden also someone in SL messaged me after reading this report and mentioned this happened to them too, but they also mention it only happened with Firestorm, which is my case too as there is no official viewer for my operating system to see if I experience this there as well
