PBR attribute for marketplace listings

Chaser Zaks
When mesh came out, marketplace added the ability to state whether a item was "No Mesh", "Partial Mesh", or "100% mesh", as well if it is fitted mesh.
I propose that with the addition of PBR, it is made so we can see if something is using PBR with "No PBR", "Partial PBR", "100% PBR", as well as a flag called "Blinn-phong Fallbacks" (MAYBE? Since some people will be using non-PBR viewers apparently).
This will benefit creators and buyers in the following ways:
- Buyers will know if content is using PBR or blinn-phong.
- Creators will be able to clearly disclaim in a visible, uniform way that something has PBR without fallbacks.
- Buyers who use old viewers will know if content will be compatible with their viewer.
It would be useful if this is a searchable filter too!

A tick box for PBR
Drake1 Nightfire
Can we get a tick box for PBR items? We have the perms boxes and demos, a check box for PBR would be useful.

This has been discussed before. Just Yes/No isn't enough. An item may be partial PBR, or the item may include both PBR and non-PBR versions. Perhaps 4 boxes: No PBR, Partial PBR, 100% PBR, Both ?

You should be able to mark it on the listing too, just like you can indicate that a product is 100% mesh.

Just like mesh. Only this is more important because PBR impacts viewers. Some folks are still using old viewers because their computers can't handle PBR. I indicate on my item's MP photo that my products are PBR, but it would be better to have a check box.

Issue tracked. We have no estimate when it may be implemented. Please see future updates here.

I agree with this. I am a builder, switching from Blinn-Phong to PBR as soon as it was available. I make certain to include the item's PBR status in the description, however this may be overlooked by the customer. Some of my PBRing (new word) is over old builds and so have both PBR and Blinn-Phong, some I have no intention of applying PBR materials to, and everything built since November of 2023 has been exclusively PBR. Instead of explaining all this in the description, making it longer and so less likely to read, checking off the boxes as we do with mesh would be a time saver.
I vote yes.

I agree with everything EXCEPT the inclusion of Blinn Phong fallback as a metadata item.
The reason I am against that is because it sets the precedent that in the long term customers will still be using PBR incompatible viewers and signals to merchants that PBR may be undesirable to customers.
LL need to stick to it's vision and get everyone onto PBR compatible viewers ASAP, performance issues withstanding, rather than add features that make this transition period a permanent fixture of the MP.

I like it. Simpler may be exclusive options "PBR", "Not PBR" "Both" so it is clear what to filter on.

I voted for this. My only caveat is that I'm making clothing where I include a PBR version with B-P fallback, AND the B-P-only version. I do this because sometimes the lighting in the location you're going to (which is not under your control) could make the PBR look awful. So if something like that was implemented, it would be important to NOT make it an either/or choice--I need to be able to check more than one box.

Dana Enyo I tend to agree with you as some creators may be choosing to include both the PBR AND legacy Non PBR content when they create items. I have seen a few creators note this in the description of the item when is helpful. Just hope that people will actually READ that description to see what is actually included when purchasing.

Rockridge Constantine I write a lot more in my descriptions than most, and try to make things clear on the graphic as well. AND I link to a video that shows how the item looks in motion! I can't force someone to make use of all that information, but it's there. (By the way, inworld people STILL ask me "What's PBR?")

Dana Enyo Yes, the average user doesn't know what or care about what "PBR" is, and just wants to buy stuff and plop it down on their land. PBR has been so standard in their experience for so long, even making a POINT that something is PBR would add more confusion.
What is more important is that all products regardless of what texture set are applied to them WORKS for the user in at least the default SL viewer

Cynite00 Resident Again, it's different with things that move between environments that you don't control, like clothing and vehicles. A bright chrome PBR dress will turn black in an environment where skylight is cut off; the fast remedy is to switch to the same dress in a B-P texture. There's going to be a long learning curve while venue owners learn to block outside light (e.g. the Sky) and create PBR-compatible lighting within.
Besides, sometimes PBR just doesn’t look as good. There's tradeoffs on this stuff.
